Sakurai paid amazing attention to flow, using the immortality of Ajin at every chance to display epic skill。 Overall, I loved Ajin: Demi-human so far。 The supernatural premise is enjoyable, and the accompanying art is both horrific and fantastic。 The 3rd person narrative allows for multiple perspectives, so the reader can watch both Kei and other characters interact and scheme。 The main antagonist, Satou, especially benefits from this POV。 He’s a complete contrast to Kei— Satou likes to do things for fun and acts childish, Kei acts mature and serious。 While we don’t learn much about Satou in this volume, I’m excited to see where his character goes。 。。。more

Violent ImmortalsAjin: Demi-Human is a supernatural manga by Gamon Sakurai。 It’s told through the third-person point of view from multiple characters’ perspectives。 The manga depicts lots of gore and some disturbing scenes, but the storyline and characters kept me glued to the page! It was thrilling to read this。The story follows the life of Nagai Kei, a normal student in school up until the day he is fatally wounded in a traffic incident。 Instead of dying, Kei regenerates and comes back to life。 He realizes from this instance that he is an Ajin。 In the world of Ajin, a small group of people possesses immortality and immense regenerative abilities。 The only way to discover an Ajin is for them to die and come back to life。 When an Ajin dies, their regenerative skills trigger, causing them to grow back lost body parts。 This allows Ajin to recover from any injury within seconds。 Once Kei realizes what he is, he immediately escapes his hometown。 Ajin is viewed as inhuman in this world, and people will report and turn in any Ajin to the government for money。 While the government claims to protect the Ajin, in reality, they perform various inhumane experiments on the immortals。 They say they do so for “the progress of mankind” (Sakurai Ch 1)。 Kei doesn’t want that to happen to him, so he escapes with his ex-friend, Kai。 The story follows them as they try to escape the government and other enemies, out to get Kei for their own gain。The story is imaginative and engaging。 The plot isn’t as straightforward as it seems, and a lot of unexpected twists are thrown in。 However, the author uses them in moderation, so the story isn’t one whole rollercoaster ride。 Instead, the author uses the characters’ motivations to actively change the plot。 It’s cool watching Kei go up against both Sato and the government, and watching as his priorities change with each new obstacle。 And because the manga is told through the 3rd POV, readers can also watch Sato and the government plan and adapt to the situation。While there is a lot of lore to learn, the author does a bit of an info dump with Ajin。 He lists the Ajin’s history, their abilities, and how they’re treated in modern society in the span of a few pages。 It gets a little overwhelming, but each idea is reinforced as the story goes on。 One such ability is the black ghosts。 Ajin can create “black ghosts。” Black Ghosts are combat-orientated entities that only other Ajin can see。 Each Ghost differs in appearance under its owner。 Most of the characters are pretty well-rounded。 Some are stiff and a little bland, but for the most part, they’re well characterized。 My favorite character is, however, Sato。 He just makes the manga so much more interesting and fun。 He also provides an interesting contrast to Kei。 While Kei is a child who acts mature, Sato is an adult that seeks out fun and is motivated by entertainment。 Kie is the protagonist and is morally grey at times, Satour is the antagonist and has a good reason to justify his actions。 However, both characters are clever and motivated by the opposition。 While Kei finds this a little irritating, Satou finds this fun。The illustrations in the manga are magnificent! The author doesn’t hold back all when it comes to gore。 Considering that people are dying repeatedly in this manga, it would be disappointing without any bloodshed or violence。 However, the author makes sure that lots of brutal deaths are masterfully depicted in this story。 The scenes really added a lot of details to the plot, and I really like how Kei looked coming back to life。 The black ghosts are especially cool-looking as well。Overall, I really enjoyed this read! I just absolutely loved the representation of immortals and how the series portrayed and explored the possibilities of their abilities。 The characters are entertaining, and the plot is so intriguing and complex! If you really like violence and gore, along with some anti-government movements and a huge mental game of chess, I would definitely suggest this manga for you! However, if death and blood are not your things, then stay away! In a series with immortals, death is ever-present and oh-so-persistent。 。。。more

Ajin: A More than Human ExperienceAjin: Demi-Human completely captivates any reader with its realistic portrayal of a fantastical series of events。 Tsuina Miura starts the dark fantasy in a fictionalized, real-world Japan and infuses the gritty, dangerous Earth with the spectacle of dark fantasy characters/creatures。 Gamon Sakurai continues the Ajin story starting on volume two, and never ceases to increase the stakes and dread felt by every character and reader。 Viewer DiscretionThe bottom line Ajin: A More than Human ExperienceAjin: Demi-Human completely captivates any reader with its realistic portrayal of a fantastical series of events。 Tsuina Miura starts the dark fantasy in a fictionalized, real-world Japan and infuses the gritty, dangerous Earth with the spectacle of dark fantasy characters/creatures。 Gamon Sakurai continues the Ajin story starting on volume two, and never ceases to increase the stakes and dread felt by every character and reader。 Viewer DiscretionThe bottom line is that Ajin thrives as a mature work of fiction manga。 The series was published originally in a seinen magazine which usually gears its works towards an older audience。 Therefore, not only does the story possess a heavier subject matter but also goes about portraying said subject as dark and violent。 Depictions of torture, terrorism, and oppression are prevalent within the pages of just the first three volumes, and Ajin only becomes darker as the series progresses。 PremiseA driven yet cold highschool student dies after a truck runs him over。 Then, he gets back up。 He and everyone in the immediate area realise that he is an AJIN, an immortal human。 However, “demi-humans [are] not human” to the government and many civilians who hunt Ajins to advance humanity (Miura chp1, pg12)。 The ensuing chase grows exponentially in scale as Kei and his human friend Kai fend off thugs looking for a reward, government agencies, and Ajin factions aiming for justice and chaos。 Kei’s life continually becomes worse as pressure from an Ajin terror war pulls his life apart to change the world。 GreatnessAjin utilizes an objective stance on minorities as the base of its story and themes。 The social commentary on the instability of human reaction based on minute differences in physical features rather than character feels second to none, especially in the genre Ajin inhabits。 Furthermore, the character writing really accentuates the themes and message。 Within just the first three volumes, the main character displays tendencies akin to a real person: confusion, fear, and a feeling of abandonment。 Additionally, Kei is selfish。 He realises what he must do to live normally, and his actions definitely root themselves within a gray moral compass。 The main antagonist absolutely steals the show in the early stages。 Sato is charismatic and plays a facade of caring when all he really strives for is chaos and fun。 Don’t worry, the side characters are not abandoned with each possessing or gaining a motive for which side they are on and why。 Since Ajin reads in graphic format as a manga, the art style must tie everything together, and it succeeds beautifully。 At first, the art looks above average, but by the third volume Gamon Sakurai exercises his free reign with gorgeously detailed characters and scenery, which he introduces through a more realistic style yet sketchy and personalized demeanor。 Flaw and RebuttalNow, the first few volumes may feel disjointed because of the writer switch, but trust me when I tell you that Gamon Sakurai really took Ajin to the next level once he gained full creative enterprise over the series。 The art, characterization, plot developments, and themes all enhance dramatically once Gamon Sakurai finds his path by the third volume。 Don’t get me wrong, volumes one and two were great, but volume three will leave you begging for much, much more。 Wrap upAjin: Demi-Human clears the requirements to become a modern day masterclass of manga, similar to Attack on Titan, in my honest opinion。 Everything stated above drew me in like no other manga before。 Plus, the series just ended recently finishing up with a total of seventeen volumes, so if you decide to binge it all in two or three days do not feel ashamed, feel proud。 。。。more
